Who We Are

Saul’s Light is a New Orleans-based grassroots nonprofit that provides support, advocacy, and community to bereaved families and families with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the state of Louisiana. In 2014, Kimberly and Aaron Novod’s son, Saul, was born prematurely at twenty-eight weeks and six days. He passed away after twenty days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Their son’s story and their experience in the NICU inspired the creation of Saul’s Light.

What We Do

We provide support, advocacy, and community to families in Louisiana with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or whose babies have died. We also have created Little Libraries with our partner hospitals to encourage reading in the NICU. Reading in the NICU promotes early literacy, bonding, and intimacy. 12-15% of babies born in the United States are admitted to the NICU, many of whom were born pre-term, which is much more likely for Black women and people of color. Being in the NICU and/or losing a baby is extremely isolating and traumatic. On average, 60% of NICU parents are at risk for developing PTSD symptoms. The average cost of a NICU admission is $76,000. You can support Saul's Light by hosting a care package drive for families, hosting a book drive for our partner hospital NICUs, becoming an advocate, and/or donating!
