Needs From: HandsOn New Orleans

Volunteer: Common Ground Relief Free Pantry

Common Ground Relief has hosted food and supply distributions at 1804 Deslonde Street since November 2020.

Our food security initiative was established in response to COVID-exacerbated food insecurity in the Lower Ninth Ward. We served families throughout Southeast Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Ida.

Volunteer tasks may include unloading food donations and restocking shelves, greeting patrons, loading groceries into vehicles, and managing food stock. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for the outdoor weather. Bring a mask, water, and lunch.

Note: This is an individual volunteer opportunity - for group requests related to wetlands restoration, please reach out to Common Ground Relief (volunteer@commongroundrelief.org).  You can also view other volunteer opportunities using the links below:

Volunteer: Native Plant Nursery Care

Common Ground Relief's Native Plant Nursery is a community green space designed to grow thousands of native trees, pollinator plants, and marsh grasses that are used to restore Southeast Louisiana's coastal habitats each year. Since 2009, this space has welcomed thousands of visitors to learn about native ecology and work alongside us, or just relax under the shade of mature Cypress and Oak trees!

The nursery is a fenced-in, half-acre site located in the Lower 9th Ward, just three blocks from our main office. There is ample street parking and a drinking fountain on site, picnic tables, ADA compliant pathways, and mobility assistance tools available upon request.

Common tasks that we seek assistance with include weeding, watering, mulching, potting, and organizing plant materials. CGR staff will be present to answer any questions about the plants and landscapes we work with!

All nursery activities take place outdoors. While shady areas and seating is available, please dress appropriately for the weather. CGR advises all volunteers to bring the following in order to have a great time at the nursery:

1. Close-toed shoes that are OK to get dirty. NO slides or flip-flops.

2. Comfortable, lightweight clothing that is breathable and movable.

3. Sun protection like a hat and sunglasses.

4. Reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste.

CGR provides the following supplies to all volunteers:

Bathrooms are available at our office on 1800 Deslonde St.
