Needs From: HandsOn New Orleans

Volunteer: Tree Planting in Bayou Bienvenue

Spend the day in the sun, on the water, and down the bayou with our team as we work to plant 200 native trees each day to restore the once great Bayou Bienvenue Cypress Swamp, which spans between Orleans and St Bernard Parish.

This is an active, teamwork based event that is completely outdoors and weather dependent

PREPARE:

Bring or borrow from CGR a pair of boots that are OK to get muddy. Dress in long layers for changing weather and sun protection. A hat and sunglasses are recommended. Leave jewelry and electronics on shore or at home!

All volunteers must pack their own lunch and bring a large reusable water bottle. Extra bottles of water will be provided.

CGR also provides gloves, first aid, bug spray, sunscreen, and all tools & materials needed for the project.

Schedule:

8:45 am: Arrive at CGR HQ, 1800 Deslonde St, to borrow boots, load up supplies, and caravan to our launch site

9:15 am: Drive to and arrive at our launch site on Paris Rd in St Bernard Parish. The exact launch depends on the project day, but both sites used are a 15 minute drive from CGR.

9:30 am: Load supplies onto our boats and travel to the project site. Safety instructions will be shared on shore, and planting demonstrations will be shared upon arrival to the project site.

10 am: Begin planting trees! Working in small teams, CGR staff will share the layout and methods used for the planting project. Frequent water breaks are encouraged.

12 pm: We take a lunch break together at noon

12:30-2 pm: After lunch, continue planting the remaining trees

2 pm: Begin loading supplies back onto boats and finishing any remaining tasks

2:30 pm: unload supplies from boats as needed and depart from the launch site
