At 826, one of our central programs is Afterschool. Afterschool is a free, creative, and literary-rich program where students grades 1-5 receive 1-on-1 support with homework, reading, and writing. Afterschool meets at our Writing Center on 1750 St. Bernard Ave in the 7th Ward Mondays - Thursdays from 3:30 pm -6:00 pm.
We are currently looking for volunteer tutors to help support our Afterschool students. Volunteer tutors participate in writing activities with the students and help them out with creating stories, improving reading comprehension, and writing. Volunteers may also help students with homework and daily journaling. We request that volunteers with Afterschool are able to make a recurring weekly commitment to establish continuous relationships with our students in the program. Volunteers do not need a background in education, just a passion for working with kids, a belief in the inherent potential and creativity of all youth, and a desire to support the voices and learning of New Orleans' young people.
If you are interested in joining our amazing 826 New Orleans krewe, please apply here: https://826neworleans.org/volunteer/ and we will reach out to you with our onboarding materials.
Thanks so much for your interest! Our volunteers are the greatest asset to our team and integral to our mission to amplify all New Orleans youth voices through writing and publication.
