The Urban Conservancy worked with folks in the Pines Village and Melia neighborhoods in New Orleans East - one of the largest and most neglected parts of the city - to identify an outdoor area that they wanted to improve for environmental, recreational, and aesthetic benefit. Community leaders selected a stretch of sidewalk on Dwyer Rd which was overgrown to the point of total inaccessibility and became a disappointing eye sore for neighbors. Through grant funding and massive volunteer support, we cleared the sidewalk and installed three rain gardens featuring irises, hibiscus, and bald cypress trees. Now, until we determine a long-term maintenance plan for the space, we need more hands to steward the space through monthly weeding and litter pickup events, keeping everything clear and accessible. That’s what our volunteer group will be doing on Tuesday, 08/11!
