Volunteer: Volunteer Tutors Needed to Assist Immigrant & Refugee Families

Catholic Charities Immigrant and Refugee Services’ Family Literacy Program is an initiative through its education department. This program offers comprehensive English language, academic, tutoring, and civic/community services for immigrant and refugee families in the New Orleans community. We are seeking reliable, passionate volunteers to help support this program. Volunteers work primarily as tutors, working one-on-one or in small groups to help our clients with academic, English-language, workforce, or Citizenship services. This volunteer position provides an excellent way to connect with our migrant community in a more individual, personal, and friendly manner.

This position is currently virtual! We hope to go back to in person when safe.

Tuesdays, 1-2:30pm

Wednesdays, 6-7:30pm

Thursdays, 1-2:30pm

Volunteer: Spanish Speaking Reception Support

Immigration and Refugee Services is in need of volunteers who speak Spanish to support reception at our St. Lawrence office located in Metairie. We are looking for volunteers who can can commit to a weekly volunteer opportunity for ideally 4 hours at a minimum. Reception is in need of this support Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Tasks include answering the phone, recording data about the calls, filing, and welcoming clients to their appointments. Note this is an in person volunteer opportunity with a face mask required.

The intern will work closely with the ESL and Family Literacy Program staff to supplement program activities and enhance services to the students.

Responsibilities include:

Opening and closing Family Literacy class sessions Assisting to facilitate class discussions and activities Creating one-on-one or small group pairings for students and tutors Curriculum development for students practicing English, preparing for citizenship interviews, and workforce development Planning for events outside of regular Family Literacy class hours

Students with an interest in intergenerational education, English as a foreign language, or immigrant and refugee services are encouraged to apply. Proficiency in Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, French or other languages valued.

Schedule: Flexible Mon-Fri between 9 am – 7 pm. Approximately 8 hrs /wk.

Catholic Charities' ESL program is looking for people to teach adult ESL classes. co-teachers for classes, and ESL tutors/small group leaders who are able to commit once a week for 1.5 hrs for a minimum of 4- 5 months. These classes are currently being held online, but will eventually transition back to in person when safe. 

The ESL program holds trainings virtually a few times a month to on-board new volunteers, and you will need to attend two of those before you begin, as well as fill out onboarding paperwork.

Volunteers do not need any prior teaching experience, ESL experience or knowledge of a language other than English and will be trained for their position.

Classes are held on weekdays in the following shifts:

9 am - 10:15 am
10:30 am - 11:45 am
6 pm - 7:15 pm
7:30 pm - 8:45 pm
