Needs From: HandsOn New Orleans

Come join us at Crown Community Garden in New Orleans East! You'll be learning gardening basics, landscaping, harvesting and helping to plant produce for the community. 

We welcome students in need of community service hours, adjudicated community service volunteers and members of the community simply looking to get involved. Volunteers with the following charges (past or present) are not eligible to complete their hours at The Broadmoor Improvement Association: theft of any kind, sexual assault or misconduct of any kind, or violent crime of any kind.

Please do not come if you are feeling ill or have a fever, or if you have been around someone who is ill. 

Team Assignment: Broadmoor Food Forest

Reports to: Co Executive Director & Director of Programs

Purpose: Community Gardens Volunteers support the horticulture team to care for our outdoor garden space at  The Broadmoor Rain Garden. 

Location: Broadmoor Rain Garden (3601 S Miro St, New Orleans, LA, 70125)

Primary Responsibilities:

Pruning, Mulching, and weeding

Watering

General grounds maintenance

Distributing & removing beneficial biologicals (insects, mites, etc)

Qualifications:

Interest in care and maintenance of living collections

Cooperative nature, including the ability to accept instruction and correction

Ability to bend and lift up to 25 pounds

Comfort working outdoors

Experience with plant care is a plus, but not a requirement

Training Provided:

Introduction to role and responsibilities in person by Co Executive Director

Volunteer hours are 4-5:30 pm every Thursday. You can stay the whole time or however long you can commit to this volunteer time.

Resurrection Gardens is looking for volunteers to help with weekly garden maintenance. Current needs are clean-up post Ida, soil amendment, and raised bed maintenance / building. The garden has access to a recently demolished gymnasium and needs help relocating bricks and cinder blocks to the garden. 

David lives across the street from the gardens and is open to volunteers coming from the hours of 9am to 7pm. Please reach out to David directly to coordinate day / times with him. His phone number is 920-265-2963.

This is an ongoing, Monday - Thursday opportunity. There is a potential to get your own raised bed for growing if you become a consistent, weekly volunteer.

The Acorn Farm is looking for volunteers who can help us with farming!  That can include tasks such as planting seeds, checking on and watering plants, pulling weeds, harvesting and mowing grass.  Additionally our Master Gardener lives near by and is able to guide and provide gloves/tools for the volunteers.

Volunteers are able to choose either 1 hour or 2 hour shifts to make sure we are staying out of the heat for too long.  Please do bring water for you to stay hydrated!
