Heart of Passion is a nonprofit organization founded in 2002 that molds the next generation of community leaders with character, confidence, and compassion by teaching high school students in New Orleans the skills needed to fully plan and execute an all-expenses paid retreat for teenagers with cancer. This retreat for teenagers with cancer exists to tear down the walls that cancer builds emotionally and socially for teens; and to add a spark of VIP treatment during the key life phase of adolescence.
Heart of Passion and its "for teens, from teens" motto is comprised of two specific and interdependent programs. First, the Leadership Development Program is a year-long program for motivated high school students from New Orleans. Through tailored training workshops, which are facilitated by local young professionals, these students are able to learn and develop business fundamentals, communication, confidence, and servant leadership skills.
While participating in the Leadership Development Program, the high school students utilize business, networking, and communication skills to independently plan, organize, fundraise for, and execute an all-expense paid retreat for teens with cancer. This four-day, overnight retreat is the second programming focus of Heart of Passion. Hosted annually in New Orleans since 2011, this retreat strives to provide positive experiences for teens with cancer that they can look forward to throughout the year and enjoy the moment. Being diagnosed with cancer as a teenager can be particularly confusing, difficult, and isolating. Therefore, this retreat hopes to lift up teen cancer patients when they need the most support; provide positive memories to share; and create a place for the teen guests to build friendships and confidence that can help balance out the negative impact and effects that cancer can have on their everyday lives.
