In June of 2026, CGR was awarded a grant by AARP to build and distribute 150 Disaster Prep Kits to our elderly neighbors (age 50+). These kits are designed to help older neighbors shelter in place for up to a 3-day period given inclement weather and dangerous travelling conditions.
These kits were informed by the awareness that the majority of inclement weather in New Orleans takes place during the hottest time of year, when prolonged exposure to heat poses risks to vulnerable populations including elderly folks and those living with certain medical conditions. These kits aim to address 4 critical needs: food, water, electricity, and information.
Contents Include:
-transparent, weather tight bin
-solar charging bank, emergency radio, and flashlight
-instant cold packs
-hydration packets
-3 gallons of water
-nonperishable, high protein food items for 3 days
-wet wipes and bug spray
-printed resource guides and document checklist with waterproof folder
During Kit Packing events, volunteers will help assemble disaster kits in an assembly-line style, keeping supplies organized, neatly stored, and will help keep areas clear of tripping/falling hazards.
Kits will be distributed during CGR's Free Pantry on August 15th and August 22nd or until all kits have been distributed.
Please wear close-toed shoes that are comfortable to walk in. We will provide water, bathrooms, wifi, and music!
