Native Seed Collection in Lake Maurepas

Calendar Happens On Sep 19, 2026
Time 9 am-1 pm

Description

Join CGR for a kayak paddle in Lake Maurepas to collect native seeds and plant cuttings of species not available in stores! CGR, in partnership with Beyond the French Quarter and the CSED of the Lower 9th Ward will be leading a kayak paddle for a small group of volunteers to reach and collect species we want to grow out in our Native Plant Nursery, for use in future restoration projects across Southeast Louisiana.

Limited seats are available, so BYO Kayak if you can. Lifejackets will be provided and mandatory throughout the trip. We will launch from a private boat launch, so the precise location will be shared closer to the date. The travel time from CGR headquarters is approximately 45 mins-1 hr so plan accordingly. Limited carpooling seats are available.

Staff will instruct volunteers on what to look for, how to harvest, and how to store each species that we hope to find. Those seeds and cuttings will be brought back to our nursery to cultivate for a year or more before transplanting them in a nearby degraded swamp.

Prepare by bringing plenty of drinking water, sun protection, snacks, and an appetite for adventure!

Reach out directly to volunteer@commongroundrelief.org with any questions.
