Main Goals for This Position to Accomplish:
The primary purpose of this position is to support ongoing documentation efforts at Chalmette National Cemetery.
Brief Description of Work to be Performed:
Volunteers will perform on-the-ground confirmation work to compare results of a 20 year old survey to the current status of assigned sections of Chalmette National Cemetery.
Length of Commitment:
One day, January 15, 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Tools, Equipment, and Vehicles to be Operated:
No special equipment or experience needed. The project will be completed using pencil and paper.
Location Where Work Will Be Performed:
Chalmette National Cemetery, 8606 St. Bernard Highway. Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the National Cemetery. No overnight accommodations or food service are available. Volunteer should also bring refillable water bottles, personal sun-protective and/or rain outerwear (hats and glasses, sunscreen, etc.), and wears long pants that can get dirty and closed toe shoes.
Physical Requirements of Work:
No specific skills are needed other than the physical ability to stand, walk and stoop for long periods of time. Volunteers must be able to follow directions and, after training, safely document headstones according to SOP. Must have and show respect for the significance of the markers. Volunteers must be able to work outdoors for long periods in temperatures above 80 degrees.
