Description

On behalf of the National Park Service, the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation's HOPE Crew initiative, with sponsorship from D/2 Biological Solution, we thank you for your interest in the Volunteer Month (March 17-30) at Chalmette National Cemetery in Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.

The goal of this project is to connect the city of New Orleans with the preservation movement and the National Park Service. Through hands-on work, volunteers will learn how to properly document, realign, and clean headstones in Chalmette National Cemetery.

Volunteers will learn how to properly document, realign, and clean headstones through hands-on work, while gaining a deeper understanding of Chalmette National Cemetery through a brief interpretative program.

Monday-Friday shift runs from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Saturdays and Sundays have two shifts: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Feel free to sign up for as many time slots as you’d like.

  • Those below 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.
  • For youth groups, we ask that there be one adult supervisor for every ten youth participants.
  • An electronically signed release form is required from each volunteer before they begin any volunteer activity. (After submitting the form on the right, you will be directed to the online release form.)
  • Minors must have their application form electronically signed by their parent/guardian.

Registration will open at 8:30 am everyday. Registration for the afternoon shift will open at 12:30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Please arrive with appropriate clothing (closed-toed shoes, long pants, a hat) and a fully charged cell phone. We strongly encourage you to bring a lunch to enjoy during the interpretative program, as well as sunscreen and bug spray.
