Description
The Committee for a Better New Orleans is looking for a few technology-savvy folks to help a group of about 30 senior citizens play the Big Easy Budget Game on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. Please bring a personal laptop or tablet.
It's key that we hear from seniors in this data-driven game on community needs. Because the game is online, many cannot participate without assistance. As a volunteer, you'll have the chance to work one on one with a senior to help them have a say in local government.
What is the Big Easy Budget Game?
After Hurricane Katrina, billions of dollars flowed to New Orleans to aid in recovery efforts. For the average citizen, it felt like those funds were going anywhere but their communities. We wanted to help New Orleanians understand their complex city budget in an approachable, hands-on way. The Big Easy Budget game asks YOU to play "Mayor for a day" by balancing the city budget. In the process, users see how we're spending money, learn about local government, and provide valuable data about what real people want to see in their communities. We share this data with advocacy organizations, neighborhood groups, and local government.
Who is CBNO?
The Committee for a Better New Orleans is a 52-year-old civic engagement advocate. We believe that cities work better when the people who live in them have a say in how they work. We help train neighborhood leaders, encourage policies that allow for community voices to be heard, and work with residents and elected officials to make our city a better place to live.
What's Needed to Volunteer?
The only required experience is that you've played the game yourself before volunteering. An optional webinar is encouraged, but not mandatory for all volunteers. We'll walk you through the game, point out places seniors may want to put funding, and touch on common troubleshooting fixes. More information on this webinar will be provided to all volunteers in advance of the date.
